How to make the right and informed choice of materials for a countertop?

Materials for countertops

A countertop should not only blend in with the overall interior and be aesthetically pleasing, it should also be practical. There are many different countertop materials for your kitchen and each one of them has its own unique characteristics and advanatges.

HPL laminate

HPL laminate

The countertop is made of water-repellent chipboard (class E1) lined with high-pressure laminate (HPL). The decorative sheet, which is obtained from layers of melamine impregnated with special thermosetting resins, is subjected to a combination of heat (>= 120 °C) and high pressure (>= 5 MPa), giving the finished product mechanical resistance and chemical resistance, ease of use and maintenance. The countertop edge variance include:  post-formed side edges, square profile or with a beveled profile and a 1 mm ABS plastic edge.  HPL countertop can have different appearances depending on the workmanship and the chosen finish that makes such countertop suitable for both classic and modern models.

Fenix NTM®

Fenix NTM®

Fenix NTM is an innovative material related to laminates that has been developed for interior design. It is manufactured by simultaneous heating (up to approx. 150 °C) and application of high specific pressure (> 7 MPa). By using a low-reflectivity material, the surface of it is extremely matt and fingerprint-resistant, with a very pleasant soft touch. It is highly resistant to scratches, abrasion, friction, dry heat, impact, acidic solvents and household reagents. Fenix NTM has enhanced antibacterial properties, making its surface hygienic, easy to clean, water repellent and resistant to mold.

Layered HPL

Layered HPL

Stratified HPL is an extra-thick (10mm) high pressure laminate (HPL), with a decorative surface to EN 438 and ISO 4586 standards. Inside it consists of layers of cellulose fibers impregnated with phenolic resins. The surface has one or more layers of cellulose fibers for aesthetic purposes, impregnated with thermosetting resins. The thickness allows the installation of mortise sinks made of the same material.

Ceramic countertops

Ceramic countertops

The large-format thin ceramic slabs are produced using a high-tech patented process: a mixture of natural raw materials, milled in a moist state, turned into granules, pressed and then sintered at a temperature of 1,230 degrees. Ceramic is  eco-friendly, recyclable material that is highly resistant to mechanical stresses, chemical attack, scratches and deep abrasion. They come in a variety of profiles, colors and thicknesses. Ceramic do not change shape or color when exposed to heat or acids attack. The sink can be made of a similar material to 'blend' into a kitchen countertop made of ceramic slab.

Quartz countertops

Quartz countertops

The material is a mixture of 94% natural quartz and 6% resins and oxide pigments, which undergo intensive processing and polishing. This material composition provides the surface with high resistance to abrasion, chemical attack, absorption of liquids and heat. The material is non-porous, impermeable, resistant to stains, acids and solvents. Safe for the environment and food contact, easy to clean and very hygienic.
